Family Systems Theory as conceived and developed by Murray Bowen has shown strong versatility in its ability to expound upon the functioning not just of families, but any emotional-relational system that represents a congregate of individuals. Edwin Friedman, a Rabbi and family therapist, imported Bowen Family Systems Theory (BFST) into the congregational context, and demonstrated how BFST ideas and concepts could be applied by leaders for the improvement of their own function and for the greater health of congregations. In this dissertation, I provide an orientation and introduction for those being introduced to or considering BFST for a congregational context and offer Christian readers a method of theological reflection that can facilitate a sense of confidence and conviction in using BFST in and for the Church. For example, there exists a robust theological conversation partner for BFST in trinitarian theology. Using a proposed theological reflection method of alignment for animation, BFST and the doctrine of the Trinity can provide both a theory of human functioning and a theological basis for shaping ministry practices, which together can facilitate healthier functioning of both congregational leaders and the congregational system as a whole.en_US
