Abstract

The abundance and molecular size of polyphosphates in yeast are known to be influences by nutrient conditions, but there has been no previous study of changes in polyphosphate content during the growth and sporulation cycle of yeast.

Experiments were performed to determine the quantitative and qualitative changes which occur during the life cycle of a strain of Saccharomyces chevalieri with respect to polyphosphates. The concomitant changes in other phosphorus-containing substances were monitored in an attempt to assess the functional significance of polyphosphates in the overall (phosphorus-) metabolism of yeast cell. The relationship of the changes in the polyphosphates to the concomitant successive stages of culture growth and spore development in discussed.
