Abstract
<p>This thesis examines the theme of the search for self-knowledge as it is developed through Clough's three major long poems, The Bothie of Tober-na-vuolich (1848), the Amours de Voyage (1849), and Dipsychus (1850). Through the process of stating a thesis, its antithesis, and a final synthesis, Clough reaches the end of his search for a positive sense of identity in his poem Dipsychus.</p>
