Abstract

<p>This thesis examines some of Thomas Hardy's major fiction to determine the effect of the author's presence in his novels. After briefly discussing this aspect of the early novels, the thesis examines the role of the narrator in Far from the Madding Crowd, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, and Jude the Obscure.</p>
