This thesis addresses three basic questions in the theory of turbulence: how turbulence structure and dynamics changes under rapid straining, how to identify coherent structures (such as vortices) in turbulent flows and the how shocks and turbulence interact. The tools used are rapid distortion theory (RDT), wavelet analysis and direct numerical simulation (DNS).en_US
