Abstract

The equilibrium constant for the exchange of the sulphur isotopes between hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide was measured at temperatures ranging from 700 K to 1500 K. For comparison with these neaBurementa, values of the equilibrium constant wore calculated, the calculations being based on ho statistical mechanical theory of isotope effects and on spectroscopic data taken from the literature. Although the experimental results wore qualitatively consistent with theoretical predictions, there was a discrepancy between the experimental and calculated values. This discrepancy woo tentatively ascribed to uncertainty in the vibrational isotope shifts of hydrogen sulphide
