I examine the relationship between local systems of self-management and systems of state-management of wildlife in the Canadian north, placing special emphasis on the mutual autonomy and mutual inter-dependence of the systems. I offer a social scientist's perception of state-management of wildlife resources and seek reasons why the development of such management concerns has tended to cut state-management off from local self-management.en_US
