Abstract

This dissertation attempts to show Haileyburians - students of the East India College - at the peak of their influence in India. This is done by an examination of the so-called Thomason 'school' at work in Northern India in the two decades before the Mutiny. This serves the purpose, moreover, of shedding light on a relatively neglected period of British India. The writings - private and published - of Haileyburians themselves provide the principle source of narrative, analysis, and interpretation.
