Abstract

Intranuclear mean free paths of nucleons which are incident on heavy nuclei with a kinetic energy in the range 100 MeV to 800 MeV are investigated. The heavy nucleus is modelled as a Fermi gas of nucleons. Relativistic scattering theory is employed under the assumption that on average the nucleon which is struck will initially be at rest. Constraints imposed by the Pauli Exclusion Principle are incorporated. The results can be used to solve problems in accelerator shielding and accelerator breeder technology.
