Abstract

Due to the growth in office automation and the increasing emphasis on distributed computing, data communications technology has become an increasingly important factor in the provision or· information services. Since communications is the glue that interconnects the various information services, a corporation must ultimately integrate communications, data processing and office automation both organizationally and technologically in order to provide the most cost effective service to its employees. This paper discusses a life cycle framework to achieve this integration . The framework is different from the standard system development life cycle, in that a great deal of emphasis is placed on strategic issues such as the structure of the support organization and its interfaces with user organizations, behavioral issues due to the unstructured nature of work supported by office automation, and highly relevant technical issues such as standards and security.
