A Critique of Hume's Analysis of the Design Argument

Abstract

<p>The purpose of this thesis is to show that Hume's criticisms of the Design Argument weakened considerably the logical foundation of this argument. Not only was Hume concerned to expose the local weakness of the argument, but also to show the futility involved in formulating rational "demonstrations" for the existence, nature and attributes of God. It is my contention that Hume's damaging criticisms of the design argument helped to point out the necessity of "Faith and Revelation" to the theological discipline. Many modern-day theologians have come to see this, and as such are concentrating their attention upon existentialism, faith and divine revelation, rather than upon rational theistic demonstrations.</p>
