Title: Bleeding into the Margins: The Evolution of Cartography in WWI
Authors: Beck, Gordon Walter
Keywords: cartography;World War, 1914-1918
Publication Date: 2015
Abstract: This presentation in the 2015 Lager Lecture series was created for the general public, but it has also been used frequently as a teaching tool as an example of an early, paper-format Geographic Information System (GIS). It describes the methods used for collecting, compiling, and producing maps under wartime conditions, as well as listing the unforeseen obstacles, problem solving methods, and the rapid evolution that cartography underwent during the Great War. These innovations ushered in the technologies that still underpin map creation today.
Description: This lecture also inspired the Canadian Geographic documentary, "Drawn to Victory," which can be streamed from the Canadian Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) website. The Lloyd Reeds Map Collection has approximately 1,500 maps from the Great War. They can be viewed online at: https://library.mcmaster.ca/wwi-trench-maps-aerial-photographs
