Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between hegemonic masculinity and violence within American society as seen in the HBO television show, True Detective. Ultimately, it claims that violence is a necessary aspect of hegemonic masculinity and that this violence not only affects the feminine other but also is destructive for men.
