Title: A MATHEMATICAL MODEL to aid in the Design and Evaluation of a Sound Navigation and Ranging (SONAR) System
Authors: 0'Reilly, Edmund
Advisor: Dokainish, M. A.
Department: Engineering Design
Keywords: mathematical model;design;evaluation;sound navigation;ranging;sonar
Publication Date: Sep-1969
Abstract:
The literature on relevant parameters used in the model is reviewed.

A Rigid Mathematical Model and a Stochastic Model are developed to describe acoustic propagation in the medium.

The two models are used to determine bounds on the design parameters for a hypothetical shipborne SONAR System.

The System so designed is evaluated on the basis of measurements made at sea.
