Abstract
Fiber optic communications make the backbone of telecommunications. Optical ber
is an excellent transmission medium due to its low loss, high bandwidth and robustness.
However, the dispersive and nonlinear e ects of an optical ber lead to signal
distortions. Propagation impairments accumulate over ber distance and seriously
distort the signal in long-haul communication systems. Transmission performance
can be signi cantly improved by compensating for ber dispersion and nonlinear effects.
In this thesis, we carry out theoretical analysis of ber nonlinear e ects and
develop analytical models to characterize di erent kinds of nonlinearities. Moreover,
we investigate various digital and optical methods to compensate for dispersive and
nonlinear distortions, which signi cantly enhance transmission performance, spectral
e ciency and system capacity.
