Abstract: The candidate has examined the religious controversy between Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the Archbishop of Paris, Christophe de Beaumont. In his study he has attempted to determine why Rousseau wrote Emile, why the Archbishop criticized and condemned it; and to give his personal appraisal of the controversy.
