Aircraft and Satellite Remote Sensing for Biophysical Analysis at Pen Island, Northwestern Ontario

The capabilities of a number of remote-sensing techniques for biophysical mapping in the subarctic have been examined at Pen Island in northwestern Ontario. After a two week field reconnaissance, colour infrared aerial photography was studied and a detailed biophysical map of the area was produced. Using this knowledge LANDSAT satellite data of the site were investigated. In a visual analysis o...

Petrology and Geochemistry of the Heron Lake Stock, Superior Province, Wabigoon Subprovince, Northwestern Ontario

The Heron Lake Stock is a lenticular shaped, pretectonic granitoid complex intruding the Jutten metavolcanics of the Savant Lake Greenstone Belt, Wabigoon Subprovince, Superior Province. Mapping, petrography, and chemical analyses have revealed that the stock is essentially trondhjemitic, with minor quartz diorite, granodiorite and quartz monzonite. The trondhjemites have undergone a high degre...

Mass Transfer with Chemical Reaction From Single Spheres

Forced convection mass transfer rates from single gas bubbles, with accompanying chemical reaction, were determined experimentally in the intermediate Reynolds number range. The reacting system carbon dioxide-monoethanolaminc was chosen for this study.

A mathematical model, describing forced convection mass transfer from a single sphere with accompanying first or second order react...

The Township of Puslinch: A geographic enquiry

The Northward Expansion of the Albertan Parkland-Boreal Forest Ecotone Boundary in Response to Mid-Holocene Climatic Warming

A 7.09 m lacustrine sediment core was taken from Mariana Lake, Alberta (55º57'N, 112º01'W) to determine if the regional vegetational complex had been affected by the mid-Holocene Hypsithermal. Dating control was provided by 6 radiocarbon dates, with a second degree polynomial fitted to the dates to give an age to depth curve. The basal date of the core is 11 300 ± 110 yr BP. Fossil pollen analy...

Performance Evaluation of the McMaster Incident Detection Algorithm

The McMaster incident detection algorithm is being tested on-line within the Burlington freeway traffic management system (FTMS) as an alternative to the existing California-type algorithm currently in place. This paper represents the most recent and comprehensive evaluation of the McMaster algorithm's performance to date. In the past, the algorithm has been tested using single lane detectors f...

Study of Three-Body Nuclear Force

Until now, the nuclear many body problem has been restricted almost entirely to considerations of the two-body force. However the meson theory of nuclear forces predicts that the exchange of mesons between three or more particles will give rise to a three-body or may-body force. The meson theory which has succesfully explained the main features of the phenomenological nucleon-nucleon potent...

Fatigue Softening of Copper Single Crystals

The fatigue softening behaviour of copper single crystals was investigated as a function of temperature. Copper crystals, prestrained in tension, were softened by "push-pull" cycling at constant plastic strain amplitude, in the low amplitude range, and the cyclic stress-strain curves determined at various temperatures. Transmission electron microscopy was employed to determine the detailed ...

Numerical Solution of the Laminar Boundary Layer Equations

An implicit finite difference technique has been developed for the solution of the steady two dimensional boundary layer equations.

The numerical method is free of stability limitations and similarity assumptions. Use has been made of Wu-type starting profiles which enable one to start the calculation from the leading edge.

Attractive features of the technique are its simp...

Prehistoric Settlement Patterns on the Central Coast of British Columbia

Over the past half century, archaeologists have been interested in how the environmental variation of the Central Coast has affected settlement patterns. Archaeologists relied on ethnography and subsistence models to explain settlement distribution but were unable to analytically demonstrate influencing factors. The objectives of this thesis were to investigate: (1) the spatial arrangement of s...

Modeling of solution and surface–initiated atom transfer radical polymerization

Controlled radical polymerization (CRP) can be viewed as the middle ground between living anionic polymerization (LAP) and conventional free radical polymerization (FRP). It combines the precise control over polymer structure offered by LAP, under a tolerant reaction condition similar to FRP. One of the most studied CRP is atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), with over 10,000 papers pub...

Casualties of War? An Ethnographic Epidemiology of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic Among Soldiers in Canada

This thesis is a biocultural analysis of the 1918 influenza pandemic among soldiers in the Polish army and the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) training in Canada. Using an ethnographic epidemiological method and a variety of archival sources, I explore the 1918 influenza pandemic and focus on the first two pandemic waves which occurred between 1 January and 31 December 1918. This research ...

Small-Scale Farming in Saint Ann, Jamaica: A Cross-Section Analysis of Gross Cash Income on a Selected Number of Farms

This study appraises the significance of a selected number of variables - economic demographic, and physical - in explaining the inter-farm variation in gross cash income on a sample of small-scale multiple enterprize farms, Jamaica, West Indies. Chapter I outlines the purpose and methodology of the analysis, while Chapter II describes the physical geography and farming systems of the area....

Direct Energy Conversion Using the Beta-Voltaic Effect in Epitaxial Silicon P-N Junction Devices

This thesis presents an investigation of the electron-voltaic effect using epitaxial P-N junctions. The effect is manifested in the direct energy conversion of beta particles emitted from a radioisotope promethium^147 source by single and multi-junction devices. The purpose of the investigation is to determine the power outputs of the devices which may be combined in series and parallel com...

Structural Relationships between the Exshaw Thrust and Heart Mountain syncline, Exshaw, Alberta

Displacement transfer between faults and folds has been extensively documented in the Rocky Mountains as an explanation for structural variability along strike producing seemingly similar overall shortenings. A series of subparallel imbricate thrusts and an associated syncline in the Southern Canadian Front ranges at Heart Mountain has been mapped at a scale of 1:16,667. Megascopic, mesosco...

Small Scale Fracture Toughness Testing

Small scale tests were utilized in order to obtain characteristic fracture mechanics parameters such as the crack opening displacement (C.O.D.) and the J-integral. Two main types of steels were used (H.S.L.A. and AISI 4340) in obtaining data over a wide range of yield strengths and ductilities. Tests were done to see the effect of both notch geometry and sample geometry·in one of the H.S.L....

Angular Correlations in Mg24

A method is described by which spins of nuclear energy levels might be determined, which is a combination of coincidence experiments with Sodium Iodide detectors and angular distribution measurements with high resolution solid state detectors. The method is applied to the 8.87 MeV level in Mg24.

6,6-Diaryl Fulvenes. Reduction to Benzhydryl Cyclopentadiene by Amide Bases

This work was started to investigate new methods of synthesizing certain fulvenes. It was hoped that nucleophilic aromatic substitution of chlorine on 6,6-bis-(p-chlorophenyl) fulvene would provide an alternate route for the preparation of para-substituted 6,6-diphenyl fulvenes which had previously been prepared through the appropriately para-substituted benzophenone and cyclo-pentadienide ...

A Computing Memory: Design and Applications wih Special Reference to Correlation

The philosophy of parallel processing within computers is discussed and a word-organized memory array is described in which each word location includes an independent, autonomous, arithmetic and logical processor. Several examples of computations within the memory are suggested and application in the solution of potential field problems is discussed. The concept of the arithmetic memory cel...
