Unlocking the Future of Secure Research Data with SEAL

Do you have data that should be under lock & key?

At Spark, we understand the importance of safeguarding sensitive research data, and that’s why we’re excited to share recent improvements to our Secure Empirical Analysis Lab (SEAL). SEAL is designed to provide researchers with state-of-the-art security, that is affordable, and accessible.

Initially established twenty years ago as a way for researchers to access potentially personally-identifying data from a government agency, SEAL has since evolved to support users working with proprietary data, large but non-sensitive datasets, health data, data linkage projects, data sharing and more. Whether handling business and government data, health records, the stories of individuals, or other sensitive information, SEAL ensures that your data is protected while helping enable groundbreaking research.

Making SEAL More Accessible

Remote access to our secure environment has always been a cornerstone of SEAL. Researchers can collaborate globally, sharing resources and analyses. With our new pool system, the experience becomes more stable, streamlined, and easy to use. Users used to have to choose from a list of host computers at each login. Now, they are automatically connected to a virtual machine on the server that suits their research needs, prioritizing the one they were previously using.

This improvement simplifies the remote access process, reduces the barrier to entry, and ensures fairer allocation of resources by locking up fewer computers. Teams no longer need to coordinate who uses which computer at what time. This enhancement makes the system more user-friendly, even for those less familiar with technology.

Benefits of the Pool System

  • Cost-Effective: By sharing resources, researchers can access SEAL at a fraction of the cost, making it feasible for projects with limited budgets.

  • Enhanced Collaboration: The pool system fosters collaboration among researchers, enabling the sharing of ideas and methodologies within a secure environment.

  • Diverse Applications: SEAL is equipped to handle a variety of sensitive data types, making it ideal for research across multiple disciplines.

Our Commitment

We are dedicated to supporting researchers by providing research infrastructure that meets the highest standards of data security. By making SEAL more accessible and affordable, we are paving the way for innovative research that respects and protects the confidentiality of sensitive information.

To learn more about SEAL and how you can benefit from our new pool system, visit the SEAL website or contact us directly.

Together, we can unlock the potential of your sensitive data - ensuring it remains secure while accessible for impactful research.

CoLab
Research on research innovation (yes, it's very meta) points to a simple truth.  Being in the same physical space and able to informally interact significantly increases cross-disciplinary collaboration and discovery.  The Spark CoLab aims to be such a space.  It is a free, open co-working space for graduate students, research staff and faculty.  You can learn more on our website or stop by from 9 am - Noon or 1 pm - 4pm on Tuesday or Thursday for a tour and orientation.

SEAL

Some data is critical to addressing major research questions, but is also profoundly sensitive and must be secured.  SEAL is a high security data repository that allows approved researchers worldwide to access highly sensitive data securely.  Data owners can use it to engage researchers in using their datasets and researchers can access data that otherwise would not be available to them.

Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study

The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study is a collaboration between the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The PATH Study is a household-based, nationally representative, longitudinal cohort study of approximately 46,000 adults and youth (ages 12-17) in the United States. The PATH Study was launched in 2011 to inform the FDA's regulatory activities under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which was signed into law in 2009.

This workshop will utilize hands-on examples to better understand the PATH Study sample design and weighting. Specifically, attendees will gain a better understanding of how to conduct longitudinal analyses to estimate change over time, as well as pseudo-cross-sectional analyses to estimate prevalence. This workshop will focus on understanding and using the PATH Study data files, not on a specific analytic approach. The workshop will combine lecture, discussion, and hands-on exercises.

The workshop will be offered in two formats (in-person or virtual-only). Applicants should apply for the in-person or virtual-only sections based on preference. Each section will be offered on different dates, and the same course content will be covered in both.

Full Workshop details here
Apply for this Workshop here.

The deadline to apply for the PATH Study Workshop is May 31 2024.
