Enhancing Accessibility at the CoLab: A Commitment to Inclusivity and Innovation

In our continuous effort to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all researchers and students, Spark: a centre for social research innovation is delighted to announce accessibility upgrades to the CoLab. This initiative, generously funded by the Vice President of Research through the Research Centres and Institutes Fund, underscores our commitment to inclusivity in academic research spaces.

The CoLab, a dynamic space for research, study and collaboration at Spark, has recently undergone a series of upgrades aimed at enhancing accessibility. We have installed a self-opening door, ensuring easy and independent access for everyone. Additionally, the CoLab now features two height-adjustable work tables, catering to the diverse needs of our community and providing comfortable and adaptable workspaces for all users.

In the coming weeks, we'll also be adding braille signs to each room within the CoLab. This will make navigation easier and more intuitive for visually impaired students and researchers, furthering our dedication to creating an environment that's accessible to all.

We're proud of these enhancements and grateful for the support from the Vice President of Research, from Nick Kaplan in FSS who did the accessibility assessment of our space, and Paige Maylott who showed us McMaster Library’s amazing Campus Accessible Tech Space (CATS) and pointed us to great vendors. These upgrades not only improve the functionality of the CoLab but also help us better align with our core values of inclusivity and accessibility in academic research.

As we continue to improve and adapt our facilities, we welcome your feedback. Please feel free to reach out with suggestions or comments on how we can further enhance the accessibility and usability of our spaces.  And if you want to use the CoLab and would benefit from accommodations, we are eager to do what we can to support your use of the CoLab – if you would benefit from something, odds are good that many others would too.

About the CoLab

The CoLab at Spark offers a unique environment for faculty and graduate students to work quietly or interact with fellow methodology-enthusiasts across the university.  Whether it's for individual research, group workshops, or interdisciplinary collaborations, the CoLab is designed to foster productivity and creativity.

Access to the CoLab is open to all graduate students, faculty and research staff within the McMaster community. We encourage you to take advantage of this exceptional space. For more information on the CoLab, its resources, and how to access it, please visit our website. Here, you'll find detailed information about the facilities and how they can support your research endeavours.  Also, feel free to stop by Monday to Friday from 10-4 to take a tour and sign up for access.  Just come to the 5th floor of LR Wilson Hall to Suite 5803 and ring the bell.

Jan 26: Ingo Rohlfing (University of Passau) & David Kuehn (GIGA Hamburg)

Topic: "Does the tale of two “methods cultures” hold up?"
Arguments about how causal qualitative and quantitative research are “usually” or “mostly” done abound. In this talk, Rohlfing and Kuehn summarize the results of a review of 180 quantitative and qualitative articles and find that the reality of empirical research is more complex and diverse than the “two cultures” tale suggests, particularly in qualitative research.

Research on research innovation (yes, it's very meta) points to a simple truth.  Being in the same physical space and able to informally interact significantly increases cross-disciplinary collaboration and discovery.  The Spark CoLab aims to be such a space.  It is a free, open co-working space for graduate students, research staff and faculty.  You can learn more on our website or stop by from 9 am - Noon or 1 pm - 4pm on Tuesday or Thursday for a tour and orientation.

SEAL

Some data is critical to addressing major research questions, but is also profoundly sensitive and must be secured.  SEAL is a high security data repository that allows approved researchers worldwide to access highly sensitive data securely.  Data owners can use it to engage researchers in using their datasets and researchers can access data that otherwise would not be available to them.
